1949 Ten Pound Coombs/Watt R60 about Unc
Front: King George VI at the centre, denomination in each corner, Captain Cook watermark evident at right.
Back: Bas-relief scene of agriculture at right, Captain Cook watermark evident at left, denomination in each corner.
Period of Issue: October 1949 and March 1953
Provenance: Spink Australia auction 25 (July 1988), Lot 695. Graded as Uncirculated; Estimate: $200; Realised: $270.
This note has crisp and natural paper, just one centre bend is evident.
Dr Herbert Cole (Nugget) Coombs was Governor of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia between January 1st 1949 and January 13th 1960 and was then the inaugural Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia from the date of its establishment on January 14th 1960 until July 22nd 1968.
George Watt was Secretary to the Treasury from 23 November 1948 until 31 March 1951.
£10 notes with this signature combination were issued over a fraction of that period - between October 1949 and March 1953.
The mintage of the £10 notes with these two signatures was 7,540,000.
The paper of this particular note is crisp and incredibly straight, confirming it remains in original condition.
The intaglio ink is raised also, which really is outstanding for a note of this age.
Our research has shown that this note was offered for sale in the important Spink Australia sale held in July 1988. It was graded Uncirculated at that time and sold for 35% more than the pre-sale estimate.
It remains a superb example of the largest denomination note to circulate throughout Australia during the Korean War.
