This superb Perth proof copper coin has far more eye appeal than most struck during this era.
Anyone familiar with Australian coins prior to 1955 will have a clear understanding of the reason proof coins were originally struck Ð as evidence of the minting machinery doing its task to perfection.
During this period, proof coins were generally retained for storage in various public collections around the nation and the globe, and were only ever distributed to private individuals on very select occasions. Australian proof coins made before 1955 are exceptionally rare; are stunning to look at in FDC condition and are extremely historic.
In an article published in the Journal of the Numismatic Association of Australia (Volume 8, p58), Mr John Sharples (ex Numismatic Curator of the Museum of Victoria) records certain figures relating to the production of proof copper coins by the Perth Mint in the 1940's.
This research indicates that no more than twelve proof pennies dated 1943 were struck at the Perth Mint, and that eight of those coins were distributed to official collections around the globe at that time.
This of course means that only 4 1943 proof pennies struck by the Perth Mint were available to collectors in the year they were struck. The nation was of course in the middle of the Second World War at that time, so there were very few collectors active and with the funds available to acquire rarities such as this.
Our research into auction records for this coin indicates that just 13 1943 Perth Mint proof pennies have been sighted at auction in the 28 years since 1993 - a number of those coins had qualifications to their grade. As the images here show, this particular example exhibits an attractive tan patina, as well as hues of blue, green and purple.
It is known that the staff at the Perth Mint performed their duties in difficult circumstances throughout WWII - maintenance of equipment and machinery was not as frequent as normal circumstances would have permitted, staffing numbers were certainly below optimum levels also.
An examination of the technical characteristics of certain proof coins during the WWII period confirms this - more than a few proof coins struck at the Perth Mint during the 1940 - 1945 era can be seen to be weakly struck on the obverse, at other times the denticles are found to be weak and indistinct in sections.
As the images here show, this coin shows sharp detail in the denticles and designs either side - the King's ear is extremely sharp, as is the entire outline of the kangaroo.
This coin is a superb Perth Mint rarity dating back to the challenging times of WWII.
