1942 InternmentToken Threepence WWII Uncirculated
Struck by K.G. Luke & Co.
Used in Internment Camps throughout Australia and Australasia.
This scarce 3d token remains sharp and lustrous.
Following the outbreak of WWII, a wide range of people were placed into Internment Camps in Australia. To ensure minimize problems with the internees (such as bribing guards; funding escapes etc), Australian coins were forbidden within the perimeter of the camp.
Metal tokens and paper notes were issued in the place of Australian coinage - the threepence tokens used at the Hay Internment Camp (in rural NSW) and in other camps across Australia were struck by K.G. Luke & Company, of Fitzroy (Victoria).
All of the internment tokens and notes were supposed to have been exchanged for Australian legal tender with Hay Camp authorities at the end of the war.
Given the number available to collectors today, it is obvious that a good number were kept as tangible souvenirs by inmates and guards of their time in Australia's various camps.
This example has been well-struck, with sharp detail in the leaves of the wreath. It has light surfaces and stacks of lustre remaining in the devices on both sides.
