Rates equal finest of one of Australia's rarest circulating coins issued in the past 80 years.
The 1942 Melbourne threepence rates among the rarest Australian coins issued into circulation in the last 80 years - it is the key coin in the King George VI series, and is a true rarity in mint state.
As our images here show, this particular example retains dusty and completely original surfaces both sides. Underneath the tone, the patina has a sparkle that is missing on so many 1942-M threepences. A strong strike is evident in the level of detail seen in the king's ear and and in each of the sheaves of wheat.
Both of the other examples of this date in this grade are locked up in long-term collections, which means this coin is a very rare opportunity to make strong progress towards a superior registry set of Australian threepences that may not be repeated for several years yet.
