1934/3 Threepence Choice Unc (PCGS MS63)
Obverse: Coronate bust of George V to right, legend around
Reverse: Coat of Arms date and legend
Subdued satin patina, truly scarce in mint state.
The term "overdate" is used to describe a coin that has a digit in the date that has been struck over another digit. Due to the high levels of quality control that most mints aim for, overdates are very seldom seen, but are not entirely unknown.
The most famous Australian "overdate" is the 1922/21 overdate threepence - it is so rare and keenly sought that even the most heavily circulated, problem-free example will bring $3,000 ~ $4,000 in the current market.
To be sure the 1934/3 overdate threepence is not nearly as rare, but it can represent this production "error" in a far more aesthetic way. I've seen dozens of 1922/21 overdate threepences over the past 5 years or so, while I'd estimate the number of mint-state 1943/3 overdates I've seen in that same period of time could be counted on one hand.
This particular example has been sharply struck both sides, and retains attractive and original surfaces to boot.
In the same value bracket as the most heavily-circulated 1922/21 overdate threepence, yet exponentially harder to get, it has to be excellent value for money.
