Unofficial Australian Set of Florins 1927 ~ 1963 Sherwoods in coloured sleeve
1933 Florin Choice Unc (PCGS MS63)
Obverse: Coronate bust of George V to right, legend around
Reverse: Coat of Arms with date and legend
A strong example of this Depression-era rarity.
The Great Depression ensured the rarity of many coins & banknotes that were issued in the years between 1929 and 1933.
Economic activity was so limited during 1933 that the number of florins minted that year was less than 20% of that struck in 1927.
For some reason, most 1933 florins that remain available to collectors today in mint-state quality have a subdued and dusty patina. This particular example has a light and attractive lustre, much cartwheeling is evident when it's moved in the hand.
All of the fine details have been sharply struck, the obverse fields are largely free of any significant detracting marks.
It remains a tangible reminder of the resolve and discipline that would have been needed to avoid spending a valuable coin such as this during one of Australia's most challenging economic periods.
