This example of Australia’s most desirable florin is equal to the finest known.
The Great Depression ensured the rarity of many coins & banknotes issued at the time - economic activity was so limited during the Depression that the number of coins minted in 1932 was just 6% of that produced in 1927.
Ask anyone that grew up during the Depression what two shillings could buy in 1932 and you’ll have no shortage of spirited answers.
Any collector of pre-decimal coins will attest that the 1932 florin is the most difficult standard pre-decimal silver coin to come by (in any condition) and that it’s a real prize in superior grade.
One thing we can learn from the “Depression Generation” is the importance of setting aside money for a rainy day – a 1932 florin is an excellent way of doing just that.
This particular example is one of just 3 coins that has been graded by PCGS as being in MS64 condition, making it the equal finest graded by PCGS to date. As you can see from the images, the coin has been extremely well struck right across both sides, and the surfaces retain a frosty blast-white appearance. The bright surfaces look even better in the hand than they do in these images.
Although the market for premium quality Commonwealth coins has risen exponentially following adoption of the PCGS grading standard across Australia, collector competition for the finest known 1932 florins has always been strong.
Just one notable auction result before the PCGS standard became the default here in Australia was the $39,610 paid for the (raw) John Wilson example at a Noble Numismatics auction in April 2008.
The Benchmark Collection of Australian Commonwealth coins, auctioned by IAG in January 2015, contained a 1932 florin graded as MS 64 by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), not PCGS. That coin made a hammer price of $30,000, for a nett price of $35,775.
We believe this coin is competitively priced and is well worth putting away by anyone with an interest in putting away an incredible slice of Australian numismatic history.
