Florin King George V 1932
Obverse: Coronate bust of George V to right legend around
Reverse: Coat of Arms date and legend
A bold example of this important Depression-era rarity.
Economic activity was so limited during the Depression that the number of coins minted in 1932 was just 6% of that produced in 1927.
The Depression was hardest felt in 1932 – unemployment was 30%, and with very limited income, families cut back spending on all but life's necessities.
Ask anyone that grew up during the Depression what two shillings could buy in 1932 and you'll have no shortage of spirited answers.
One thing we can definitely learn from the “Depression Generation” is the importance of setting aside money for a rainy day – a 1932 florin is an excellent way of doing just that.
This particular example shows strong detail in all the right places both sides, but clearly doesn't have original surfaces.
The feathers and stars on the reverse remain sharp and distinct and 8 pearls can be clearly seen on the obverse.
Some very minor pitting is evident in the fields under magnification, and it looks like the obverse has been rubbed or wiped by a previous owner.
This is not a coin that will "grade" with PCGS (or NGC for that matter), but if you're just after a strong coin that has lots of detail and eye appeal, it surely fits the bill.
