This attractive KGV 5 pound has lots of eye appeal for the money.
The Riddle Heathershaw signature combination is the most affordable in the "Harrison" series of pre-decimal notes. It is invariably the "got-to" signature combination for collectors keen on building a type set of Australian pre-decimal notes in superior grade.
Five pound notes with these signatures were circulating throughout the Australian economy in the last "boom" years of the late 1920's, as well as at the very moment that Australia came off the gold standard, on December 17th, 1929.
Records held by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) show that the Commonwealth Basic Wage in 1929 was £4 10 shillings 6 pence, which shows just how much purchasing power a single five pound note had at that time.
This particular note has two minor nicks on the top and bottom edge at the centre of the note. The sharpness of those same edges indicates they may have been trimmed ever so slightly by a previous owner.
All of the other characteristics of the note speak to a higher grade than we've attributed - the paper is bright, as are the simultan colours. This is a truly attractive type note that will cost far less than most that have the same eye appeal.
