1925 Penny PCGS AU55
Obverse: Coronate bust of George V to right, legend around
Reverse: Denomination above date, legend around
Alloy: Copper | Diameter: 30.80mm | Weight: 9.45g
Mintage: 117,289
This key-date penny has a strong 8 pearls in the crown and is a strong example of our 2nd rarest penny.
The 1925 penny is the second rarest date of all Australian pennies; it is one of the most popular Australian coins that features the portrait of King George V; it is one of the most highly-prized coins struck by the Melbourne Mint and is one of the most keenly sought coins in the entire Australian predecimal coin series.
Royal Mint records seem to indicate that it was struck quite late in 1925, mainly to make sure there was no chance that Australian shop tills ran short of pennies over the 1925 Christmas break.
This coin can be classified as the "Q Die State" variety - it has a die crack below the first "O" in COMMONWEALTH on the reverse, which to some makes that letter look like a Q. Interestingly, there is also a clear dot after the last "A" in "AUSTRALIA".
The denticles, lettering and pellets across the reverse remain sharp and clear. Nearly all of the fine detail in the King's portrait is evident - the crown in particular remains incredibly sharp.
A minor planchet flaw is evident at around 11 o'clock on the obverse - if that were not a genuine characteristic of the coin, it would no doubt have graded several points higher.
It remains a solid example of Australia's second-rarest penny.
