1916 One Pound Collins/Allen R18E about Fine
Period of Issue: November 24th 1916 through to 1918
Provenance: ex Colonial Coin Auctions (Brisbane) May 2010, Lot 607.
Described by the auctioneer as about VF quality.
This is an honest example of this scarce Collins Allen pound variety.
The first banknotes issued under the Australian Commonwealth Government went through a rapid series of changes, this was primarily brought about by the volume of notes required to keep up with demand.
Not only was there a signature change in the first few years, but the serial number format on our £1 notes changed no less than five times. This note (the R18e type) has the serial number printed in large, black letters, has the letter "A" as the prefix and the letter "J" as the suffix.
Research by Mick Vort-Ronald shows that just 9,000,000 £1 Collins Allen notes were printed with this serial number type, rating it as a truly rare £1 note variety.
These notes were released into circulation between December 1916 and 1918..
This note obviously circulated for a decent period of time - there is obviously a reasonable amount of folding evident, yet the body of the note remains decent, and the colours are far better than expected for a note of this grade.
Due to the wear on the top and bottom edges, we grade it as being in about Fine condition. It remains free of pinholes, tears, stains or any other problems.
All in all, it is an honest example of this rare Australian £1 note, perfect for the collector working on a type set of Australian pre-decimal notes on a tight budget.
