This is a premium example of a truly rare Treasury-series 5 pound note.
Most collectors of Australian pre-decimal banknotes collect by "type", that is they start off looking to get one of each type of Australian banknote printed during our pre-decimal period.
One of the main stumbling blocks to a complete "type" set of Australian one pound notes is the Treasury series five pound, as seen here.
The Treasury Series of Australian Commonwealth Notes
The "Treasury" series of Australian banknotes was on issue between 1913 and around 1923 - these notes are referred to as "Treasury" notes by collectors because they were the first Australian banknotes issued for the Australian Commonwealth Treasury.
There were a number of changes made to the way Australia's currency notes were printed in the decade between 1913 and 1923 - not only did the signatories change from Collins and Allen to Cerutty and Collins, but the format of the serial numbers added to each of the notes changed several times also.
When it comes to the Treasury series £5 notes, collectors have 6 different varieties of note to choose from. There are 4 varieties of Collins Allen £5 note, and two varieties of Cerutty Collins note. All of this means that each of the Collins Allen £5 notes varieties were only ever offered for incredibly short periods of time, as the table below shows:
R# | Signatures | Type | Start | End |
R35 | Collins / Allen | No mosaic | September 1913 | September 1914 |
R36a | Collins / Allen | Prefix U, dark blue serials | 28/9/1914 | 14/6/1916 |
R36b | Collins / Allen | Prefix U or V, black serials | 28/9/1914 | 14/6/1916 |
R36c | Collins / Allen | Suffix U or V | 12/7/1916 | 27/9/1918 |
R37a | Cerutty / Collins | Suffix V | 27/9/1918 | 19/12/1918 |
R37b | Cerutty / Collins | Prefix U with Suffix A to F, H or J | 23/12/1918 | 4/2/1924 |
As the images here show, this note really is a premium example of a truly rare Australian banknote type.
The paper is firm and original, the corners and edges are all completely sharp and straight.
Importantly, there is no loss of detail in the mosaic of 5's across the back due to excessive folding.
It remains a truly premium example of Australia's rare Treasury-series 5 pound note.
