Unofficial Australian Set of Florins 1927 ~ 1963 Sherwoods in coloured sleeve
1913 Florin Choice Unc (PCGS MS63)
Obverse: Coronate bust of George V to right, legend around
Reverse: Coat of Arms with date and legend
Lots of cartwheeling lustre evident across both sides, sharp in the feathers and crown.
When our national silver coinage was introduced in Australia in 1910, the new Commonwealth Government attempted to produce enough coins to satisfy the national economy for several years.
For this reason, the mintage figures for the years immediately following 1910 were comparatively low.
Although the mintage figure for the 1913 florin is only very slightly lower than the mintage figure for the 1910 florin, it is clear from the population of both coins known more than a century later that far more of the 1910-dated coins were set aside than those dated 1913.
At the date on which this is being written, PCGS has graded a total of 194 Australian florins dated 1910 (112 of which have been graded MS62 or better), while they have graded just 50 florins dated 1913 - only 13 of that 50 have been graded MS62 or better.
This particular coin shows a typical London-Mint strike - the emu's feathers remain sharp and distinct, as does the point of the Federation star at the top of the reverse. The edges of the scroll and each of the letters in it are distinct and well-defined, as is the King's portrait on the obverse.
The surfaces both sides exhibit a wonderful cartwheeling lustre that the static images we've posted here just can't capture, it truly remains a fresh mint-state example more than a century after it was struck.
Values for premium Commonwealth coins have eased to levels we haven't seen for several decades, I firmly believe this coin offers excellent value for money in the current market.
