This is a sophisticated forgery of an incredibly rare note.
The "No Mosaic" five pound note is one of the true rarities of Australia's pre-decimal banknote series.
Issued in the dark days of the Great War, they had significant purchasing at a time of great need.
Some of the less scrupulous members of Sydney society sought to take advantage of the appearance of the new notes and began issuing their own forged notes. Printed with a simultan press, they bear enough resemblance to the real thing they would have fairly easily passed muster, particularly in a busy or stressful environment.
They did not last undetected for long, and as a result, within 12 months the Note Issue Department added an additional layer of complexity to the reverse design. A "mosiac" of five's was included in all Australian five pound notes issued from September 1914 onwards, all notes issued before that were actively withdrawn.
The contemporary forgery offered here is directly linked to one of the most significant changes to the designs on Australia's circulating currency in the early 20th century.
As observed above, it has traded previously via auction and would make an excellent addition to any advanced collection of Australian paper currency.
The quality of the workmanship needs to be seen to be believed!
