1910 Perth Edward VII Sovereign Unc (PCGS MS62)
Obverse: King Edward VII
Reverse: St George & Dragon
Very, very tough to come by as good as this.
I remember leading into the auction of the gold coins from the Reserve Bank of Australia archives that I had a number of clients letting me know which dates they wanted to pick up out of it.
One specific client came to mind as soon as I saw this coin - he’d been building date sets of Jubilees, Veils, Edwards and Georges in mint state, and the 1910 Perth was the last date he needed for his Edward VII set.
I asked him what his maximum bid was, and he said “I’ve been after this b**tard coin for 2 years, just buy it!”
Although it wasn’t my money, I asked him to confirm that’s what he really, REALLY wanted me to do. “Yes, just buy the bl**dy thing!” was his reply.
The end result was that lot 2408 (the nicest of the 3 1910 Perth sovereigns in the sale) made $1,100 hammer - about 4 times what most of the Edward sovereigns in the same grade made. (This is 15 years ago mind you; when Edward sovereign collectors were far fewer than they are now).
The current PCGS population shows them to be a bit easier to get relative to other dates in the Edward VII than they used to be in the days when these coins were all traded raw, yet it still remains a tough date to get in mint state.
Verify the certificate details for this coin directly on the PCGS website.
