King Edward VII 1904 Half Sovereign Perth Mint
Obverse: Edward VII
Reverse: St George & Dragon, missing designer’s initials. (B.P.)
Mintage: 60,000
Bold details and a light patina right across both sides.
Prior to the introduction of the ten-shilling note by the Commonwealth Government in 1913, the half sovereign was a heavily-used coin in the Australian monetary system.
The population of Perth in 1904 was around 240,000 people, which is an indication of the level of demand there would have been for hard coinage at that time.
As the images show, this particular example shows light friction across both sides - in addition to the weak reverse strike, the high points of St George, the horse and dragon have all been blunted.
The obverse strike is better, so there is far more detail to the portrait of Edward VII - there is some light friction in the fields, while the devices retain a great deal of original mint lustre.
This is a solid example of this scarce date - PCGS have graded just 3 examples higher than this one.
