This is a premium example of the first circulating half sovereign struck by the Perth Mint.
The mintage figures for all Australian half sovereigns shows that unlike sovereigns, half sovereigns were struck according to the extent of the economic need in the geographical area they were intended to circulate in, and not according to the amount of gold that was presented to the Mint.
The Perth Mint struck close to 14,500,000 sovereigns between 1899 and 1903, yet struck less than 120,000 half sovereigns over that same period of time.
Although huge quantities of gold ore was being dug up on the famed "Golden Mile", the population of West Australia remained less than 200,000 people until well into the 1900's.
As a result of the relatively small population in Western Australia at that time, half sovereigns were only struck at the Perth Mint on average once every 3 years or so between 1899 and 1918.
As the vast majority of the half sovereigns struck remained in circulation for an extended period of time, they are incredibly difficult to obtain in premium condition.
For the collector interested in building a superior set of Perth Mint gold coins, this is an excellent example to acquire.
