1886 Melbourne Shield Sovereign Unc (PCGS MS62)
Obverse: Queen Victoria Young Head
Reverse: Coronate shield within wreath, mintmark below
This historic sovereign is a truly premium example of one of Australia's rarest circulating gold coins.
The 1886 Melbourne is not only the rarest date in the entire "Shield" series but dedicated collectors of Australian gold coins will also readily tell you that the 1886 Melbourne Shield is one of Australia's rarest sovereigns of any type.
It is a coin that has been missing from a number of storied collections of Australian coins. A number of the most well-known collections of Australian gold coins that included an 1886 Melbourne gold sovereign were quite satisfied with a circulated example.
The 1886 Melbourne Shield sovereign was one of the few truly rare coins missing from the Heyde collection (sold by GK Grey of Sydney in 1975). Heyde had some incredible coins but was missing an 86M Shield. The Quartermaster Collection of Australian gold coins is, without doubt, the most comprehensive collection of this type ever formed and included a coin graded good EF quality.
The Sharps Pixley collection of Australian gold coins was offered by Noble Numismatics in November 1989, it also contained a comprehensive range of rare dates, the 86M Shield in that collection was graded about EF quality.
This coin is one of just 3 examples of this historic coin in this quality I have seen either personally or offered via auction in Australia over the past 50 years.
