1886 Melbourne Shield Sovereign Shield Reverse good EF (PCGS AU55)
Obverse: Queen Victoria Young Head
Reverse: Coronate shield within wreath mintmark below
Look at that sharp hairline - this coin was missing from a number of really important collections of Australian gold.
Not only is the 1886 Melbourne Shield reverse sovereign the rarest Australian sovereign with the Shield reverse, it is unequivocally one of the rarest and most important of all Australian sovereigns.
Just how many of these coins were struck is not known, Melbourne Mint staff did not regularly delineate the mintage figures of sovereigns between the Shield and St George reverse types.
It is interesting to note that the mintage of half-sovereigns at the Melbourne Mint in 1886 was just 38,000 coins, and further that the 1886 Melbourne Shield sovereign is exponentially rarer.
This would indicate that the actual mintage of the 1886 Melbourne Shield sovereign is far lower than 38,000 coins.
I've sighted around 6 different examples of this coin at auction in Australia over the past 5 years - on my estimation 3 of these would not "grade" with PCGS as they were scratched.
The three coins that stood a good chance of passing muster with PCGS sold for between $10,000 and $12,000. At least one of those was far lower quality than this coin.
As a dealer that has been active in Australian sovereigns for close to two decades now, I simply cannot believe what good quality examples of this coin are currently selling for on the open market.
This is a rare, historic and important coin, and is currently available at what I believe is a rock bottom price.
I firmly believe it is excellent value for money, and will easily stand the test of time.
