Queen Victoria 1884 HALF SOVEREIGN Melbourne Mint
Obverse:Young Head
Reverse: Coronate shield within wreath mintmark below Cross on top of shield clear from border. 147 denticles
PCGS equal finest for type, PCGS finest for date.
This coin is an exquisite example of Australia's circulating gold coinage from the mid 19th century - it retains razor-sharp detail in Victoria's hairline, the minute details in the inner shields on the reverse are also amazingly clear and distinct.
The pale yellow-gold patina on this coin shimmers regardless of the angle it is viewed from.
Not only is it the finest example of this date yet graded by PCGS, it is also equal to the finest Australian Young Head half sovereign of any date yet graded by them - only three other mint state Young Head half sovereigns have been graded by PCGS to date.
Past Australian auction sales data shows that there has only been one 1884-M half sovereign comparable to this sighted at auction in Australia for at least 15 years - 15 years!!
That coin was in the famed Quartermaster collection - described by many collectors as being the finest collection of Australian gold coins ever formed, and sold in Sydney in June 2009.
The Quartermaster example (lot 264) was also graded UNC, and made a final price of $30,067 against a pre-sale estimate of $27,500.
A higher quality example has not yet been sighted on the open market.
