This is a scarce and solid example of one of the last tradesman's tokens struck in Australia.
The penny tokens struck for John Henderson are among the last to be issued in Australia.
They also have a particular interest to us, as the building that is featured on the reverse is/was located just around the corner of our office here in Fremantle.
There are numerous die varieties of the tokens issued by Henderson - this particular example has the maker’s name below the scroll, and also has the kangaroo’s ear above the base of the N.
The exact reasons why Henderson chose to issue penny tokens is not yet clear, it seems they were struck as a competitive advertising medium.
This particular example retains a lot of detail across both sides, it is problem-free and is in better quality than most we've seen.
