Within every area of Australian numismatics, there is a set of coins or notes that has a universal appeal to collectors - a complete set of Type II Sydney Mint sovereigns in top condition is one of these “blue chip” sets. Historic; highly rare and visually stunning, such sets are the stuff of dreams for many a collector.
Anyone familiar with the Type II sovereign series knows just how rare they are in excellent condition - it really is difficult to build a set even if you "settle" for coins simply in VF condition. If a collector sets the quality bar higher than that, it can take time, connections and resources to complete the task.
1862 - Exploration and Pioneering
The population of NSW in 1862 was 366,009, in a year that sits within a period of Australian exploration and pioneering. Although the gold rushes were well underway at the time, new discoveries were being made across Victoria and Queensland. New towns were being settled, infrastructure (in the form of railways and mapped out routes between settlements) was being laid down, and the population was slowly growing.
1862 was the year that the famed transport company Cobb and Co was formed, it was also the year that the notorious bushranger Frank Gardiner held up the gold escort near Eugowra in NSW. This is described as being "one of the most audacious heists in Australia’s colonial history", where the Gardiner gang netted just over five and a half thousand ounces of gold alone, which was equivalent to many thousands of sovereigns.
Once the value of the stolen banknotes was also included, the total value of the haul became one of the largest in Australian history - equivalent to 22,000 pounds, which equates to more than $8 million in today's terms.
This particular example remains sharp cross the high points of both sides - the Queen's wreath and braid remain clear, as do the leaves in the wreath on the reverse.
While the example in the famed Quartermaster Collection appeared to be in slightly better condition, we must keep in mind that was more than a decade ago and that it also sold for over $27,000.
This is a premium example of a truly rare date in the Type II Sydney Mint sovereign series, and is worthy of being included in the finest collection.
