1860 Sydney Mint Type II Sovereign PCGS MS61
Obverse: Type II portrait of Victoria to left, date below and legend around
Reverse: Crown above AUSTRALIA, wreath around
PCGS Certificate Number: 39224061
This coin has magnificent lustre all over, and is excellent value for a coin with this eye appeal.
The 1860 sovereign sits neck and neck with the 1858 Sydney sovereign as the rarest date in the Type II Sydney Mint sovereign series.
The known population of these coins changes periodically over time, as certain coins come onto the market, so either coin can be rightly regarded as being the rarest, depending on just what has been seen on the market in recent months.
Regardless of just which of the two dates is the rarest, it is obvious to state that both of these dates are incredibly rare in premium condition.
This particular 1860 sovereign has fantastic lustre - there's a wonderful sparkling straw-yellow look to the coin either side, that simply isn't evident on coins that have circulated to any degree.
Although it'd certainly be great to see the coin without the minor contact marks that are evident, the price for an MS62 coin really is exponentially higher.
