1860 Sydney Mint Type II Half Sovereign PCGS AU55
Obverse: Type II portrait of Victoria to left, date below and legend around
Reverse: Crown above Australia within wreath, denomination below
This is a premium example of a key date in the entire Australian half sovereign series.
The best example of this date to appear at auction in recent years was the coin in the Quartermaster collection (Lot 239, auctioned by Monetarium in June of 2009).
The catalogue of the high-profile Ross Pratley collection (prepared by Noble Numismatics in March 1989) stated that "Probably only six [1860 half sovereigns] exist in extremely fine or better condition."
The PCGS population report shows there are 4 1860 Sydney Half Sovereigns known in comparable condition to the coin we offer here, while two have been graded in AU58.
