1860 Sydney Mint Type II Half Sovereign about Unc (PCGS AU58)
Obverse: Type II portrait with 1860/50 overdate
Reverse: Australia within wreath
This coin sits among the finest known examples of one of Australia's rarest circulating half sovereigns.
The Australian half sovereign dated 1860 is one of the rarest coins in the entire series - it is very difficult to obtain, even in the lowest condition possible.
The auction of the Reserve Bank of Australia's gold coin archives, conducted by Downie's in Melbourne in November 2005, was perhaps the first time ever that multiples of this date had been offered at one time. One lot of five average circulated 1860 half sovereigns were included in the sale, as were five other individual examples, none were graded better than about Very Fine condition.
To date, the two finest known examples of this coin were part of the Pratley and Quartermaster collections, both of these coins are in comparable (raw) grade, but neither have yet been graded by PCGS. Both most recently appeared at auction in 2009 - the Quartermaster example made $50,640, while the Pratley example made $48,930.
The coin retains a wonderful straw-yellow lustre right across both sides, and the "5" is clearly visible underneath the "6" on the obverse - it will need to be sent back to PCGS to have it re-certified with the correct attribution. Once correctly attributed, it will be rated alongside the equal finest known example of the rarest date in the Sydney Mint half sovereign series.
