This currently sits as the equal-finest known example of this historic Sydney Mint half sovereign.
The most recent example of a high-grade 1858 Sydney half sovereign to appear at auction made over $90,000, and that was back in November of 2007.
The only other publicly-available auction results for comparable coins are those listed below:
Lot #1380, Noble Numismatics Auction 86 (November 2007). Nett: $93,200. Described by the auctioneer as being "Finest known for year and type." The coin had a pre-sale estimate of $50,000.
Lot #1395, Noble Numismatics Auction 56 (November 1997). Nett: $8,737. Choice Unc - Described by the auctioneer as being "2nd finest known."
Lot #1379, Noble Numismatics Auction 54 (July 1997). Nett: $8,737. Described by the auctioneer as being "2nd finest known."
Lot #1491, Noble Numismatics Auction 52 (November 1996). Nett: $8,737. Described by the auctioneer as being "2nd finest known."
Lot #1619, Noble Numismatics Auction 48 (July 1995). Nett: $11,417. Uncirculated
Noble Numismatics Sale # 27 (March 1989) featured the Ross Pratley Collection of Australian half sovereigns (asserted as being one of the finest ever formed).
Ross Pratley was a Sydney based dealer in rare coins & notes - his half sovereign collection was a passion for many years.
The lot descriptions for several coins in this sale contained references to the "India Find" of Australian half sovereigns - this information is not published elsewhere (to the best of my knowledge).
The "India Find" is said to have contained the following coins:
1856 - 30 coins in EF or better
1857 - 80 coins in EF or better
1858 - 25 coins in EF or better
The auctioneer (and presumably the vendor) made further comments on the rarity of the 1858 half-sovereign: "Probably less than forty exist in EF or better condition"
