This coin rates among the 5 finest-known examples of this historic date.
The Australian half sovereign series is undoubtedly frustrating for the average collector - many of them are incredibly rare in premium condition, that few collectors ever attempt to compile a date set of them in anything higher than average circulated condition.
A successful effort to put together a complete date set of half sovereigns is often measured in decades rather than years, and as a result, such sets are very seldom seen on the open market.
This particular half-sovereign is equivalent in grade to the 1857 half sovereigns held by two of the finest collections of Australian half sovereigns ever formed - the Quartermaster collection, and the Pratley collection.
The Pratley coin was most recently sighted in July 2012, where it sold via Noble Numismatics for $21,553 (including buyer's premium). Prior to that, the Quartermaster coin was sold in June 2009 for $25,320 (including the buyer's premium).
We believe the coin we offer here is a magnificent example of the first date in the Sydney Mint Type II half sovereign series and is an impeccable portrayal of the historically-important Type II portrait of Queen Victoria.
It is ideal for a collector working towards a "type" set of Australian half sovereigns in premium grade.
