This is a solid example of the first type of half sovereign issued in Australia.
The Type I Sydney Mint half-sovereign has several unique characteristics that have ensured a high level of demand from type collectors of gold coins right around the world. They are:
- A portrait of Queen Victoria different to that seen on those produced in London;
- An actual notation of the coin's value was included in the design for the first time;
- The name of the mint was also included in writing, and most importantly
- The coins were inscribed with a national name that did not become a political entity for almost half a century.
The low mintage figures of Sydney's early half sovereigns are explained by the population of NSW at the time, around 268,000 people.
As half sovereigns circulated heavily as a medium of exchange for several decades at least, nearly all were heavily worn before being retired.
This particular example shows strong detail across both sides, has intact rims and problem-free surfaces.
It is a solid example of the first type of half sovereign issued in Australia.
