This incredibly scarce medal was struck at the same time as the Kangaroo Office gold patterns.
Reginald Scaife arrived in Melbourne on the Kangaroo on 27th October 1853, with instructions to establish Australia's first private mint.
Once the "Kangaroo Office" was up and running (around June 1854), Scaife struck a small number of halfpenny tokens for several Melbourne merchants.
The Melbourne Exhibition ran from October 17th to December 12th 1854, it was at this event that the famed Kangaroo Office pattern gold coins were displayed.
While the exhibition was underway, Scaife struck commemorative medallions such as this one for sale to visitors.
The proverb on the back of the medal is taken from a book titled "Proverbial Philosophy: A Book of Thoughts and Arguments, Originally Treated", by Martin Farquhar Tupper. Just why it was chosen for the reverse of this particular medallion is not yet clear.
