1798 Gold Guinea George III S# 3729 PCGS MS61

Rich, coppery lustre right across both sides.
Study of contemporary narratives leads many numismatists to believe that most guineas made their way to the shores of Australia in the vest pockets and money pouches of the more affluent settlers.
Our forefathers could have obtained the guineas either by cashing banknotes from the Bank of England prior to their departure or the small stash they had painstakingly built up and had treasured over the years.
Convenient and discreet to carry, the coins could have been very easily exchanged for an assured value wherever a British presence existed in the world.
Valued in currency by King to be one pound and two shillings sterling, a guinea was roughly equivalent to 3 days wages for the average tradesman.
Perhaps the first written account of the use of a guinea in NSW occurs in the very early days of the colony – still in 1788. Spalding recounts how a convict fabricated several small gold-embedded specimens of rock using a brass buckle and a guinea. The convict's plan of either escaping, being awarded a pardon from the governor went astray, however, and once the game was sprung Philip ordered him to receive a good dose of the lash for his troubles. (Probably nothing compared to what the convict who lent him the guinea did!)
Guineas of George III are scarce and in demand with collectors around the world - this particular example is devoid of wear, retains an attractive rose-coloured patina, and has a lot of sparkle to the surfaces right across both sides.
It is a superior example of one of Australia's most important colonial coins.
