The design of the Commonwealth crown stands out for its minimalism and lack of any monarchic imagery.
In 1653, England was in a period of political upheaval. The monarchy had been abolished in 1649 after the execution of Charles I, and the country was ruled by Parliament. However, Parliament itself was divided and unstable. In April 1653,Oliver Cromwell, the Lord Protector, forcibly dissolved the Rump Parliament, which had been in power since 1649. This led to a brief period where a nominated assembly known as Barebone's Parliament held power. However, this assembly also proved ineffective and dissolved itself in December 1653.
Cromwell and the Army then established a new government based on the Instrument of Government, a written constitution. This marked the beginning of the Protectorate, with Cromwell as Lord Protector. He aimed to stabilize the nation after the turmoil of the Civil Wars and implement social and religious reforms. Though the Protectorate was technically a republic, Cromwell held a position akin to a monarch, with significant power and authority. This period saw continued tensions between various political and religious factions, with challenges to Cromwell's rule and ongoing debates about the future of England's governance.
The 1653 Commonwealth crown is interesting as it is one of the few English coins to feature legends in the English language until the 1953 coronation crown of Queen Elizabeth II (which has an edge inscription in English).
