The reverse legend on this scarce gold Unite translates as “I will make them one nation” and reflects James' political aspirations.
The Gold Unite of James I, introduced shortly after he acceded to the English throne in 1603, symbolises the unification of the crowns of England and Scotland under one monarch. Struck between 1604 and 1605, this coin takes its name from James’s ambition to create a united kingdom, reflected not only in his royal title as King of Great Britain but also in the coin’s very denomination. The Unite replaced the sovereign of the Tudor period and was part of James I’s first coinage, notable for its Latin inscriptions and high artistry. The obverse of this particular issue, featuring the Second Bust of the king, shows a more lifelike portrayal with a ruff and longer beard, reflecting a stylistic evolution in portraiture.
This coin also holds deeper significance as a product of an era marked by political transformation and expanding royal authority. James I’s reign ushered in the Stuart dynasty and with it a new approach to monarchy grounded in the divine right of kings, which would have lasting implications for English constitutional history. The reverse of the coin, typically bearing the royal shield within a laurel wreath and the legend FACIAM EOS IN GENTEM UNAM (“I will make them one nation”), reinforces the monarch’s theological justification for unity and sovereign rule. As such, the Gold Unite is not merely a medium of exchange but a powerful statement of political ideology and national identity in early 17th-century England.
This particular example shows even wear across the reverse, some minor graffiti is evident in the left-hand field of the obverse.
