Junk Silver - Australia

If you like the idea of sorting through a big pile of coins to see if you can spot something rare and interesting, the lots you see in this category will be right up your alley.

Our retail shop is in Fremantle (West Australia), we buy lots of coins every day of the working week from collectors and the general public. Any coins that have a numismatic value are identified and handled appropriately, everything else generally makes its way into one of our bulk bags. Silver coins, Australian coins made in copper and mixed foreign coins - we handle them all.

We also buy a lot of pure silver and sterling silver coins and medals, now and then we'll list a bulk collection of mixed foreign rounds and medals for their scrap value.

What is Junk Silver?

"Junk Silver" is an odd American term that's been adopted here to describe Australian silver coins that trade for a modest premium over their bulk value. There are 3 basic types of Australian junk silver coins - Pre 1946 silver coins (Sterling silver or 92.50% pure) Post 1946 silver coins (50% pure) and 1966 round 50c silver coins (80% pure). The pre and post-1946 bags have a mix of florins; shillings; sixpences and threepences in them.

None of these silver coins are pure silver; none were made by the Perth Mint; the round 50c are the only junk silver made by the Royal Australian Mint during the decimal currency era.
