These scarce half sovereigns have been a solid store of value since the 1800s.
Gold half sovereigns were a trusted medium of exchange for Australians from the first day they were struck in 1855, right up until they were recalled in 1931.
They were prized far more highly than the ten-shilling note they converted into - a trusted and solid asset.
Whereas the number of sovereigns struck in any one year was determined by the amount of gold that was dug up out of the ground, mintage figures for half sovereigns were determined by the level of economic activity in the areas surrounding each Australian branch mint.
As a result, far fewer half sovereigns were struck than sovereigns, and they are much harder to accumulate.
Nearly all of the half sovereigns that remain available today are collector's coins, and very few can be obtained for a modest premium over their melt value.
Premiums for half sovereigns change with demand and supply, and it is possible to accelerate profits by taking advantage of higher premiums during periods of strong demand.
The half sovereigns we stock are from all parts of the British Commonwealth, not just Australia.
The price shown here is for each individual coin.
