A superb example, one of just 2,000 issued.
The introduction of decimal currency in 1966 was a significant event in Australia's transition to a truly independent nation. The adoption of decimal currency meant that not only was the Imperial system of pounds, shillings and pence left behind, but all of the reverse designs featured timeless depictions of Australia's unique native flora and fauna.
The 50½ coin issued in 1966 was made of 80% silver and circular in shape, and unfortunately for the Australian government they were quickly hoarded by the general public for their silver value (which was greater than 50½!) 11 million out of the 36 million silver 50½ coins struck never even left the RAM premises, and mint staff set about preparing to issue a copper nickel 50½.
The Australian 1969 50½ was the first coin in the world to be manufactured in a dodecadron (12-sided!) shape, so that fact alone meant the PNC's these specimen coins were issued in are of great importance to collectors right around the world.
Their importance wasn't fully appreciated until some years later, when several keen-eyed collectors were able to determine that the coins in the PNC's issued by Nuphil contained coins that were specially struck, and had quite different characteristics to the coins issued into circulation.
The paper quality of this PNC remains fresh and original, the coin itself has toned (as they all have), yet remains attractive and problem free.
This PNC is essential to any collection of truly scarce Australian decimal coins.
