1941 Hay Internment Two Shillings Note
Signatures: Mendel / Stahl
Serial Number: E 40381
Quality Grading: Uncirculated
Provenance:
John Wilson Collection
Lot #2788 (Part), Noble Numismatics Auction 41 (March 1993). Estimate: $4,000, Hammer: $6,000, Nett: $6,000.
Equal to the finest known examples.
Research conducted by Max Bulluss and others has estimated that 2,000 two shilling notes were printed by the "Dunera Boys" interned in Camp Seven in World War II.
As the notes are dated March 1st 1941, it is believed they were used within the confines of Camp 7 from that date. Correspondence from the Commonwealth Treasury reached the Hay Internment Camp in the middle of May 1941, effectively instructing the Camp's officers to"...withdraw and destroy all such notes...".
Of the 2,000 two shilling notes thought to have been printed, only 86 different examples have been seen offered via auction over the past four decades or so.
Just 51 of those two shilling notes show the signatures of Mendel and Stahl, only thirteen of those remain in this superb and unimpaired condition.
