It’s been a week since Noble Numismatics held their 108th auction, and the results are in. Total turnover was a cool $3.13 million - quite respectable in the current market, particularly when we consider that this time round, the auction was mainly of “standard” numismatic material.

The highlights of the morning session were the decimal error coins. There were some record prices set,...

Leading into the 93rd Roxbury’s auction, there was a keen sense of anticipation - the catalogue showed an even balance of rare and exclusive material with affordable and collectable material, exactly what punters of every stripe want to see.

That enthusiasm was dampened (quite literally) with the development of...

Anyone that is reasonably active in collecting Australian pre-decimal coins will be aware of the Benchmark Collection - perhaps not by name, but certainly by sight.

This truly comprehensive collection of Australian pre-decimal coins has been put together by Mark Duff of Strand Coins in Sydney, with the brief being to compile “the most...

The first 2 weeks of the year are incredibly active for the world numismatic market - while most Australian collectors are resting on a beach or recovering from their Christmas break, the US collector market is in absolute full swing.

The NYINC (New York International Numismatic Convention) is being held...

An article posted online about how collectors interpret the grades independently assigned to coins raised a few interesting questions, here’s just one quote from it that I believe will be of interest to Australian collectors:

The prices realised report for Noble Numismatics Auction 107, held in Sydney in November 2014, shows that the total turover came to $5.08 million - the highest for any Noble sale since late 2008, which is roughly when the Australian numismatic market peaked in it’s most recent cycle.

Selling $5 million worth of any product is certainly...

The most recent auction held by Downies in Melbourne I understand was the last one to be managed by Chris Meallin - a long-time senior staffer at Downie’s. Chris has been the face of Downie’s numismatic auctions for many years, and it will be interesting to see how his position is covered in the coming months and years.

Chris is apparently...

The mainstream media covered the recent release of of the Royal Australian Mint (RAM) Annual Report for the 2013 - 2014 financial year, and understandably made some sport of the fact that the RAM “reported a loss, after tax, of $4 million”.

While it seems rather incongruous that an organisation literally in the business of making money might somehow lose money over the course of a year...

I’m now safely back in Perth after the better part of a week in the big smoke of Sydney - it’s a fair distance from Perth and these days I’m always pleased to get out of the place!

Even though the last opportunity to view before the Status sale started at 8am, it turned out I was the first person to arrive at around 9am, and it took some time before the silence was interrupted by a...

Roxbury’s 92nd auction was perhaps more active than some people expected it to be, there were bursts of energy evenly throughout the day. The overall clearance rate came in at78%, with turnover at about $578,000, and an average lot value of around $700.

The pre-decimal coins early on may not have had much in the way of condition rarities,...
