Anyone involved in Australian numismatics will be quite familiar with the size of the Noble auction catalogues - it is nothing at all for one sale catalogue to weigh several kilograms, I’d shudder to think what their annual postage bill is.

Sale 112 was no exception - there were so many lots in this sale, they were split across two catalogues. The smaller of the two catalogues included...

One of the 6,835 emails I got a few weeks back mentioned a series of webcasts recently recorded by PCGS called “Learn to Grade Coins”. I filed it away to read “when I got time”, which of course meant I didn’t get to it until much later.

Now that I have taken some time to check the videos over, I’m pleased I did.

Reason being,...

Conceivably yes, however most unlikely.

Each year when the announcement of Australia’s Annual Commonwealth Budget falls due, a number of stories do the rounds of mainstream media pointing towards big shakeups in expenditure and assets, as pointed to in this article in the Australian newspaper in May 2015:...

When flying back from the Status International Auction 324 in Sydney a few weeks back, I happened to cast an eye over the flight map shown on the Qantas in-flight entertainment screen.

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) threw the internet into meltdown on April 12th when it revealed the designs of the first note to be released in their Next Generation Banknote (NGB) Project, the $5 note.

I wasn’t working in the numismatic industry when our current series of banknotes was introduced into circulation, between 1988 and 1996, however the level of media interest...

The 83rd IAG auction was far more approachable than the last Noble sale I can tell you - viewing could be achieved in the space of a few hours (as opposed to a few days for Noble’s), and the whole auction ran over about 3 and a half hours. Short and sweet!

IAG’s auctions have been some of the biggest and most exciting held in our industry - lots of rare, valuable and historic items,...

Noble’s 111 Auction was a few weeks back, and we’re already onto the next show, IAG on the Gold Coast (scheduled for 23/4/16).

Noble’s was a big event, in fact the biggest I can recall for years. The sale was held over 4 days (rather than the traditional 3), and due to the sheer volume of material on offer, the evening sessions ran well into the night...

I was going to start this article by stating that Noble Numismatics Auction 111 is the largest we’ve seen for some time, however that may not be correct - many of them are large, even if this one does have some incredible stock in it.

What is correct however is that Mr Noble will be doing his darnedest to stoke the furnaces of uncertainty amongst his...

As seems to be the way with the Australian numismatic market at the moment, the last round of auction activity for 2015 took place across the space of a few weeks in mid to late November.

Downie’s held their 320th auction in Box Hill, and Noble’s held their 110th auction in the State Library of NSW. I’d regard both as a success - the clearance rates were as solid as one would want or...
