Australia 1966 Proof Coin Set Light Blue Case

An excellent example, case and coins in great condition.

The introduction of decimal currency in 1966 was a significant event in Australia's transition to a truly independent nation.

This major change meant that not only was the Imperial system of pounds, shillings and pence left behind, but all of the new reverse designs seen on Australia's coins featured timeless depictions of Australia's unique native flora and fauna.

Proof coins are the same as those we see in our change, but are struck with specially prepared machinery on specially prepared blanks - the designs always stand out magnificently.

The 1966 proof set is unique in several ways - it is the only one to feature a round (and silver) 50¢ piece, and is the only one not issued in a sealed plastic container.

As a result, nearly all of the 1966 proof coin sets that remain available to collectors today have spotted or tarnished coins - sets that include each coin still in pristine condition command a significant premium.

The images here show the coins in this set pretty clearly - what you see is what you get.

The obverses of each coin really are superb, however there is some light tone to sections of the reverses of the 50¢, 1¢ and 2¢.

The light blue case is a little weathered, however it remains in solid condition.

This is a great example of Australia's first decimal proof coin set.
