Description:

AUSTRALIA 1990 FIVE DOLLAR PROOF

75th Anzac Anniversary

Obverse: Maklouf portrait of Elizabeth II to right

Reverse: ANZAC soldier with Australian flag

Australia's 2nd $5 proof, honoring the ANZACs in Gallipoli.

The general public was taken by surprise when the RAM issued a $5 coin to commemorate the opening of the new Commonwealth Parliament House in Canberra in 1988.

It was easily the largest decimal coin produced in Australia until that time, and many non-collectors decided to set them aside "for the kids."

The popularity of the coin ensured that future editions have been released by the RAM every two years since then.

The $5 proof coin for 1990 was in fact part of a joint release by the RAM and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand - the Australian coin depicts one of the most enduring stories of Australia's proud military history, that of Simpson and his donkey.
