Description:

1920 Penny Dot Below Bottom Scroll

London Obverse

PCGS XF45

Obverse: Coronate bust of George V to right legend around

Reverse: Denomination within legend date below

A premium example of this rare 1920 penny variety.

Until the first example of a 1920 penny with the dot above the bottom scroll and the London obverse was discovered in Kalgoorlie in 2003, the 1920 penny with the dot below the bottom scroll and the London obverse was regarded as the rarest 1920 penny variety.

My well-thumbed copy of George Dean's "Australian Coin Varieties Catalogue" from 1965 shows that penny variety P20E had a stated value of £150 in UNC quality, which was 30 times more than the value of the 1920 Penny Double Dot variety in the same condition.

This particular example has strong details throughout the King's portrait, was well as across the entire reverse - PCGS have graded just 4 examples better.
